When you count a field in Cognos it returns the number of non-zero records in that field. When there are repeated values in that field you may want to count the number unique or distinct records. To show the difference, here's some sample data:
If you use the calculation Count([Order Line]) you'll get the answer 6. But if you use Count(distinct [Order Line]) you'll get 3 instead.
